It's Been One Year and You Still Aren't Working?

You still aren't working after one year? What? There is nothing more pathetic than trying to explain to a prospective employer that you have not worked for the past 12 months because you've "been looking for a job."

You may not have found your career job, but that should not stop you from doing something to earn an honest living in the meantime. While employers want to hire employees with specific skills, they also want to hire someone with a strong work ethic, determination and drive.

Volunteer for a charitable organization. If you are fortunate enough to have a severance or are eligible to receive unemployment, volunteer for a charitable organization to sharpen your skills or to develop new ones. In this economy, charitable organizations could use the help. It's a win-win.

Do not scoff at legitimate income opportunities. If you are not receiving any income, you are in no position to turn down opportunities at fast food restaurants, retail establishments, baby sitting gigs, pet walking stints or anything else!

Develop the discipline to get fit. If you look good, you feel good. Developing the discipline to get fit will also help you develop the discipline needed for a successful job search.

There is no excuse. If you've been out of work for a year, it's time to regroup.
